I usually advise people to go into STEM fields. Intern positions at tech companies in the Bay Area pay around $80,000/year annualized. I always tell people to learn skills that are in high demand and short supply, and their minimum wage will be extremely high by virtue of the free market.
The vast majority of interns in a recent survey said they did not attempt to negotiate their salary.
