This is actually a good question. I faced this exact circumstance when I was at a restaurant last week, ordering take out food. I ended up tipping about 15% to a surprised look on the cashier’s face. But most Americans do not tip on takeout, since there is no “service”.

So what is the etiquette for tipping for take-out? And does the etiquette differ for, say, a large chain restaurant (like an Outback Steakhouse), compared to a mom-and-pop restaurant (say, a hypothetical joint called Luigi’s Pasta House)?
